Nordic Pole Walking (NPW) is one of the fastest-growing outdoor sports activities, and is a low-impact walking exercise anyone can perform.
NPW originated in Finland and dates back to the 1930's when a group of cross country skiers, unable to train in their sport during the off-season, developed the idea of using their ski poles to enhance the benefits of fitness walking. It wasn't until the 1990's that "Nordic Walking"or "Pole Walking" became an official sport in Finland. In 2007, the European-based International Nordic Walking Association boasted a membership of approximately 7 million people. Health insurance companies in Germany support Nordic Pole Walking and the sport is recommended by physicians.
First of all, it's fun! And...it's a social sport, butyou can do it on your own as well. Many sports activities work out only half the body. (Think jogging or bike riding.) When you use your Nordic Poles, you strengthen not only your lower body muscles, but your upper body muscles as well, while improving your cardiovascular system. 90% of your body's muscles are used when you pole walk. NPW tones your legs, buttocks, arms and core - all at the same time.
If you can walk, you can pole walk, no matter your fitness level. If your doctor tells you it's OK for you to walk, it's probably OK to do NPW. (Always ask your doctor before embarking on a new exercise program.) Even if you're very fit, you'll get great benefit from Nordic Pole Walking. (Nationally ranked marathon runners train with Nordic Poles.)
No. Nordic Poles are used behind the body to engage the upper body and reduce the force on your joints. ( Walking sticks are held in front of the body and are used for balance.)
Yes. If you want to lose weight, you have to burn more calories than you consume. NPW burns up to 46% more calories than just regular walking. (We have some great weight-loss success stories.)
Wear comfortable exercise clothing and athleltic shoes along with your water belt. (We have water belts for sale if you don't already have one.) Bring a bottle of water. Oh... don't forget your hat and sunscreen.
