Q. Just what is Nordic Pole Walking?

Nordic Pole Walking (NPW) is one of the fastest-growing outdoor sports activities, and is a low-impact walking exercise anyone can perform.

Q. Where did NPW come from?

NPW originated in Finland and dates back to the 1930's when a group of cross country skiers, unable to train in their sport during the off-season, developed the idea of using their ski poles to enhance the benefits of fitness walking. It wasn't until the 1990's that "Nordic Walking"or "Pole Walking" became an official sport in Finland. In 2007, the European-based International Nordic Walking Association boasted a membership of approximately 7 million people. Health insurance companies in Germany support Nordic Pole Walking and the sport is recommended by physicians.

Q. What's so great about NPW?

First of all, it's fun! And...it's a social sport, butyou can do it on your own as well. Many sports activities work out only half the body. (Think jogging or bike riding.) When you use your Nordic Poles, you strengthen not only your lower body muscles, but your upper body muscles as well, while improving your cardiovascular system. 90% of your body's muscles are used when you pole walk. NPW tones your legs, buttocks, arms and core - all at the same time.

Q. Can anyone do Nordic Pole Walking? Do I have to be very fit?

If you can walk, you can pole walk, no matter your fitness level. If your doctor tells you it's OK for you to walk, it's probably OK to do NPW. (Always ask your doctor before embarking on a new exercise program.) Even if you're very fit, you'll get great benefit from Nordic Pole Walking. (Nationally ranked marathon runners train with Nordic Poles.)

Q. Are the Nordic Poles used like walking sticks?

No. Nordic Poles are used behind the body to engage the upper body and reduce the force on your joints. ( Walking sticks are held in front of the body and are used for balance.)

Q. Will NPW help me to lose weight?

Yes. If you want to lose weight, you have to burn more calories than you consume. NPW burns up to 46% more calories than just regular walking. (We have some great weight-loss success stories.)

Q. What do I need to wear/bring?

Wear comfortable exercise clothing and athleltic shoes along with your water belt. (We have water belts for sale if you don't already have one.) Bring a bottle of water. Oh... don't forget your hat and sunscreen.

Q. How much will this cost?

  • Introductory classes are $15 per person - including the use of poles - and are limited to 5 participants.
  • The Nordic Poles are $79 per person.
  • If you purchase your Nordic Poles during your introductory class, you'll get the poles and the class for $85.
  • Group walks are by donation. All monies donated will go to a charity chosen by the walkers.
  • Pole rentals for group walks are $5 per walk.

You may pay by cash or check. If you plan to pay by cash, please bring the correct amount.
